Last Sardine Cannery to Close

Bumble Bee Foods has announced that they are closing the last sardine cannery in the United States, located in Prospect Harbor, Maine. According to the Miami Herald, the cannery has been in operation for over 100 years, and is shutting down because of reduced demand, and competition from canned Tuna products……Well, maybe. The company however, says they are closing because of steep cuts in the amount of herring that fishermen are allowed to catch in the Northeast…. Why is this story starting to sound so familiar? Could it be because we had over a dozen fish houses in Key West just a few short years ago, and now have only two?
