According to a front page article in the Miami Herald, a Vero Beach scientist has been recording the love songs of fish, and says the research could help determine the impacts of the BP oil spill on marine creatures in the Gulf. Grant Gilmore, senior scientist at Estuarine Coastal and Ocean Science, maintains, “If you don’t have spawning sites, you don’t have fish.”………Wow! I sure hope fishery managers have heard about this. I mean, think of the potential harm to spawning aggregations if those romantic tunes are interrupted. I’m almost afraid to say it, but I don’t remember a thing about fish love songs in the Magnuson-Stevens Act. I hope it’s not too late to get it amended.
