The FWC has prohibited all taking of Lemon Sharks in Florida waters. We don’t know what the science says, but the FWC says they took this action because they have a high potential to be over-harvested. One can only wonder who the potential over-harvesters may be. It would hardly seem likely that very many recreational fishermen are suddenly developing a taste for lemon buttered Lemon shark, though it does have a ring to it.…..If it’s commercial fishermen they are worried about, then we have that same nagging question that pops up every time there are new restrictions – Why now? Commercial shark fishing effort is a tiny fraction of what it once was. They weren’t wiped out when shark fishing was unlimited, but now they are in danger of potential over-harvest? Go figure.
